The Contract Heir Secret

Chapter 1

The divorce papers arrived before breakfast. Liana read the first page twice, then folded it neatly beside the coffee cup her husband had not touched. Three years of marriage had taught her one useful skill: never let a room see you break.

Across the table, Adrian Vale checked his watch as if ending a meeting. 'Sign it today,' he said. 'Vanessa is coming home, and I will not keep pretending this arrangement means anything.'

Liana looked at the signature line. Her name waited there like a door left open in the rain. He thought she had nothing: no family, no money, no place in his world. He had never asked what she gave up to save his company, or why his grandfather trusted her with the one secret the Vale family feared most.

She picked up the pen. Adrian's mouth curved, certain he had won.

But Liana did not sign where he expected. She wrote one sentence across the agreement, slid it back to him, and stood.

'You wanted freedom,' she said. 'You can have it. But when the board meets tonight, remember that I warned you.'

Only after she left did Adrian read the words in black ink: I own the shares that can remove you.
